*Patience, never get in a hurry when you are training your dog, I guarantee he will pick up on your anxiety and wont learn a thing.

*Keep your sense of humor in tact; it will really come in handy during those unexpected training blurbs!

What exactly is a training blurb? Well lets see, its the time when you are teaching your dog to fetch a ball and he brings back the neighbors gardening gloves, with your neighbor still in them.

Or housebreaking him and you believe it has been successful, until you walk into the laundry room and realize that he has learned to hide his mistakes, in the laundry pile. These are training blurbs, and you must maintain a sense of humor about them.

You just continue with whatever lesson you are working on, or go back to the one he didnt really learn the first time, like being housebroken.

Never loose your temper with him when he makes a mistake, it just reinforces the bad behavior, and he will pick up on the anger and frustration you are feeling. If you get mad and chase him, he probably thinks you are playing.

If you take away something he has chewed and give him a rawhide chew, he has learned that by chewing up your favorite shoe, he can get a treat.

Dogs are much smarter than most people give them credit for, and like children they are very literal, we need to be aware of this when we are training them, and keep a sense of humor and patience all the time, even during the worst of training blurbs.

Father asked her, Do you want a snack? “Yes”. He took her to one of the small fruit trees and picked an apple for you. Here you go. Daughter said, “I don’t want an apple.” Father looked at the nearest trees, all peach trees not quite ripe. Well, we don’t have anything else that’s ready yet. “I want a banana.” She pointed. “Make that tree give you one.” That’s not a banana tree, that’s a peach tree. It only has peaches.

Eventually made our way back inside father’s house for dinner. Afterward, we hiked over to a neighbor’s farm a short distance away. Their real horses were terrifying to her; they were far larger than the ‘my little ponies’ in her room. When they eagerly leaned over the fence seeking sugar or apples, she clung tightly to me.

Seeking relief, she looked at all the animals in the field. Cattle, squirrels, what might have been a donkey, and a black and white beast. “What’s that?” That’s a cow, told her. She stared at it, not quite grasping the concept. What sound does a cow make? “Moo”, she answered mechanically. And what sound does a horse make? “Neigh.” That one over there was a horse. This is a cow.

What do you do with a horse? “You ride it”, she answered, though she’d never been on horseback before. But that one eats apples.Yes. And do you know what cows do? she didn’t know if she’d think of milk maids or cow tipping. “Do I ride it?”, she asked. The cows must have seemed more friendly than the horse that had excitedly eaten the apples she’d offered it, seemingly swallowing her hand in the process. We get milk from cows.”No, Mommy, we get milk from the store.” No, Milk comes from cows. Steaks, too. “No, Mommy, milk comes from the store.”

Started to hike back home as the sun set. Continued on this track, fish sticks come from fish. Where do fish come from? The pond at the park And where do apples come from? Trees. Tried to explain where many of our daily foods came from. She then started pointing at grass and shrubbery and asking what kind of food came from those plants.

A few nights later, we were having dinner. Daughter said, “We’re having fish sticks for lunch.” And where do fish sticks come from? “Fish.” Then she brightened up and added, “And chicken comes from chicken nuggets!” What? I wasn’t able to dissuade her of her 3 year old logic. The word chicken was shorter than chicken nuggets, so the chicken came from chicken nuggets. Fish came from the sticks of fish in the freezer.

Then daughter continued the discussion at preschool the next day. They agreed with her reasoning until lunch came. Her playmates were totally lost when she asked them where the sloppy joes on their plates came from.

Then a child asked, “But where did this food come from?” Their universal answer: all our food comes from the store.

It all began with a Georgia woman in the 1890s. Catherine Evans Whitener began hand crafting tufted products. Her crafts were so popular that it soon became a craze that spread throughout Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolina’s.

The 1930s showed Singer, a producer of small sewing machines, adapting his machines to the tufted textile industry. This allowed companies to quickly generate large quantities of robes, throw rugs, toilet covers and bedspreads. By the 1940s, the tufted-textile industry had progressed into a very profitable one.

The popularity of the tufted carpet grew so quickly that manufacturers and machine developers quickly found it necessary to adapt the tufting machines used for making bedspreads to have the ability to mass produce rugs that were room sized and to make wall-to-wall carpeting. Mohawk, out of New York, largely dominated the high-priced carpet industry until the 1950s, using power looms and expensive natural wool fibers.

During the 1950s, companies like E.T. Barwick Mills and Cabin Crafts, based in Georgia, started using their tufting machines and large pieces of backing material to create a new era of less expensive carpeting. Instead of the expensive wool fibers, these manufacturers were using the less costly fiber of cotton.

This enabled them to produce carpets and rugs that resembled the expensive woven products. Efficiency was the greatest benefit to the new tufting process and enabled manufacturers to sell new carpets and rugs for half the price of the woven wool rugs.

Tufted carpets soon became one of the most controversial products being manufactured, when producers of wool carpets began putting them down, claiming the cotton made them a low quality product. The industry was saved in 1957, however, when a company named DuPont began selling a new product called bulked, continuous filament nylon.

Like cotton, the new nylon was inexpensive, yet performed as well as wool. It also could be sold for half of the square foot price of wool. This made the carpet industry one of the fastest growing in the 1960s.

Four companies controlled the majority of the carpeting industry in the year 2000. Beaulieu, Mohawk, Shaw and Interface were the four companies that produced 80% of the carpets made in the United States. The newest company in the group was Interface.

Interface chose not to get into the residential carpet market, and instead ventured into the relatively new commercial carpeting market. This was when the tufted carpets industry was introduced to “modular carpeting,” or floor mats.

Many people want to become good dog breeders. Dog breeding and doing it properly is an expensive hobby. There is the picking up of a good bitch, waiting for her to become old enough before breeding, choosing the best dog for her to mate with, and undertaking all the health checks she needs, and ensure that the dog you need also passes through the same health checks. There are potential extra expenses during pregnancy, you have to pay a stud fee (or return a puppy), you have the time at your disposal, and can incur the expense of whelping. The puppies are to be kept for a minimum of 8 weeks before sending them to their homes.

There is the need to advertise and look for good homes before sending them to their homes. As a breeder, you also need to see that the dogs have had their shots before going. You may be and ardent dog lover and want to better a particular breed of dogs. You may devote your time and energy to bettering a particular breed of dogs. Often this requires breeding dogs of a particular bloodline, thus creating particular traits that will be passed down through future generations. There is the requirement to have one or two un-neutered female dogs. If you have two or three adult dogs, you may not even need to register your kennel.

A good dog breeder does not want to use dogs with major blemishes. The breeder may show the dogs to endeavor to have a championship before breeding them. This increases the value of the dog’s future puppies. It also leads to the breeder networking with the people who know the most about the breed. The dog may not get a championship but a few wins and the dog exhibitors will take you more seriously. If one of the exhibitors has a dog with characteristics that will even out any of the flaws that your dog has, then you can breed show quality puppies.

If, as a dog breeder, you want to breed dogs for many years, you may want to choose a kennel name. The kennel name has to be registered with the corresponding Kennel Club. It may be a good idea to get a kennel permit. The permit will eventually be needed as you may require a few puppies to continue the bloodline. There is the requirement to get the permit before you are attached to your puppies. When you are breeding your dog for the first time, you should seek out a male dog that belongs to a practiced dog breeder. When the dog has bred, you need to take it to the veterinarian. You need to ask the vet about the birthing procedure. When the delivery time comes near prepare a quiet spot for your dog to deliver. These steps ensure that you are a successful dog breeder and you take care of your dog and ensure that the best dogs only breed to carry on the bloodline.

Peter Tomkins is a leading dog breeder with over 40 years under his belt.
After the death of the last of our three beloved dogs (one St. Bernard and two Rottweiler’s), decided to adopt a dog from a shelter. Spent weeks making a list of requirements for our ‘perfect’ dog: medium size (under 80 pounds), housebroken, between two and five years old, good with children, and leash broken.

Spent hours combing through pet finding sites and local shelter sites. Each day, printed the photos of possible dogs and took them home for review. Thought we found a shelter that had five dogs that would be good fits. Then, printed the photo of Bruno of a local rescue site. We found one dog picture, we knew he was the perfect dog for us.

He was 82 pounds, two years old, good with children and other animals, housebroken, and leash broken. Made an appointment, gathered my niece and her then two year old son and made the 45 minute drive to meet him. He had been with three families before finally being left at animal control. The rescue group had gotten him on his final day. He had worms and was in need of a bath, but they took him to the shelter. They were told he was destructive and was not housebroken.

However, after his bath and an exam (where the worms were found), they determined that he was really just bored, was housebroken (but the worms caused accidents), and would be a great pet. He was at the rescue shelter for two weeks before meeting up with him. It was love at first site. He immediately went to the baby and let him tug his ears and pull his tail. He was gentle, easy to walk, and just a great dog. The next week, the shelter brought him for a home visit. The decision was made to keep him, and to surprise, they let him stay that day (we were told it would take another week at least).

Everything was going fine, told he was crate trained. Apparently, he was in process of being trained. He easily destroyed two crates, a wall, and a chain link fence on a dog run (and breaking a tooth). At wits end, called the shelter. They suggested putting him on medication for separation anxiety. The medication generally takes two weeks to begin working, so I had to leave him a day-board kennel (he was fine if other dogs and people were nearby).

After visiting my normal vet for a follow-up, we discovered that he was also quite a bit younger than we thought; he was really only slightly over a year. We’ve had him now for about a year and a half. He is still on medication, but able to leave him in the dog run without him trying to get out.

Dog has also grown to 105 pounds. But, despite everything, he is the most loving and gentle dog we could have hoped to adopt. He recently completed training and testing to be a therapy dog and has patiently withstood two great-nephews under two staying with us.

Short clear commands along with obvious hand signals are the best means of giving your dog commands. Never repeat your command over and over again, it may only confuse him.

Start by getting his attention, this is best accomplished by saying his name. How you say the command is also important as is your expression, smile when you are pleased and dont smile when you are unhappy.

Your dog is smart enough to pick up on these things, and they should be used in his training. Your posture should be straight with shoulders back, the treat should be held in your closed hand so he is aware it is there.

When calling your dog to you, show welcoming body language, arms open wide to welcome him, and a happy, friendly voice all combine to let him know it is good for him to come to you.

Verbal commands should be given in a firm voice, not shouted, say no sharply and deeply, in a lowered voice. The no command should be given as he begins to misbehave; this makes him aware that what he is doing is the activity for which he is being told no.

For instance, if he begins to put his paws on you, lower your voice and firmly tell him no. In this, your body language is important, look angry and stand in a commanding stance, (leaning slightly over the dog is a threatening stance), and you should stand straight.

Hand signals should be clear and concise; they allow you to control your dog even if he is at a distance by calling his name and using dramatic hand signals.

A dog will pick up on it if you are becoming bored with a training session, do both of you a favor and be alert.

If you need to end the training session, get his attention, give him a command that he can and will follow, and release him from the training session with lots of praise and rewards.

Research your pet fish environment to facilitate duplicating it within your fish tank. Make sure your aquarium is at the best possible location with minimal temperature variations away from direct sunlight. The best and most important thing you should do in the beginning is to research fish and their environments and select the right fish. The right fish for the environment you will be able to create in the easiest possible way. If this is your first aquarium then you have to make a decision between fresh or salt water environments. In general fresh water aquariums are in general easier to manage. Once you find the particular kind of fish you like and you would like to create habitats for then you should also look into their temperaments. In other words will the kinds you like be compatible with each other is a question you need to ask your self before you select the kinds of fish for your aquarium. For example you cant place piranhas with other fish in the same aquarium it would be a bad move. After you select the fish then you should decide what kind of aquarium or fish tank you will need. If the fish you like are or can grow big then you must pick a bigger aquarium. Purchase the other parts accordingly; your filters for example should depend on how big your aquarium is. The next thing you should keep in mind is picking the right location for you aquarium. You want to keep your aquarium away from direct sunlight, away from air conditioning and heating vents but in a prominent enough place where you can see and enjoy your work. A steady temperature in your aquarium also means that algae growth will be controlled for most of the part. One more thing you need to be aware of when you are starting an aquarium is to decide how many fish you are going to place in the tank. The general rule is that one fish per gallon. But at the same time some fish are bigger than others and need more space. Therefore, you should consider that for every inch of fish you will need on gallon. In other words, if the fish you want grow to become one inch each then you can place 30 of them in a 30 gallon aquarium. Dont make this calculation based on the size of the fish when you purchase them but based on the size they reach when they are fully grown. If this is your first aquarium you should start relatively small. If you are going to work with a fresh water aquarium you should start with an aquarium that is not bigger than 30 gallons and if you are going to go with a saltwater set up dont go bigger than 70 gallons. Keep in mind that the bigger the aquarium the better the environment will be. More water means that the temperature can stabilize faster and destabilize harder. If this is your first aquarium then get kit that includes the right filters and pumps. Equipment that has been selected for the tank you are buying.

A good way to buy an aquarium is to buy it on sale and save money. Find the right Fish Tanks for Sale.

Most everyone has a passion and love for animals and most everyone has some type of animal for a pet. In todays society where two-income families have become the norm and young professionals delaying marriage and/or children, many own pets and taking better care of them than ever before. This is a great opportunity for you to tap into this growing market and start a pet sitting service business.

Why not take your love for animals and turn it into a profitable business. With over 120 million dogs and cats in the United States there is a huge market for this type of service. You decide when and where to work. Having a
business will not only give you a sense of confidence but the self-satisfaction youll receive in your abilities to run a business.

Most pet owners will be more than happy to pay for this service if they know their pets are well cared for while they are away.

You can either start out on a part-time basis, full-time basis or only occasionally. You can generate additional income with either of these options.

In the past when pet owners had to be away they either had to leave their pets at unfamiliar kennels or impose on a friend or neighbor to care for them. With a pet sitting service you can provide them with the best alternative in caring for their pets in their own environment enabling the pet owners to travel and knowing their pets are in good hands. People dont mind paying for a good service that allows them to be worry-free when away from home.

The number one draw back being the cost difference. Regardless of cost, you should strive to treat your animal as well as you do yourself if not better. The less expensive brands are exactly that: cheap in price as well as quality. Many veternarians have likened some of these dog foods to pouring gravy over cardboard and serving it up to our much loved friends. It will fill the space in their stomachs but it won’t give them the nutrients they need to thrive.

You’ll find that once your pet adapts to the higher levels of nutrients and good calories they tend to eat less of the higher quality dog food than they did with the lesser versions. The long and short term benefits of this upgrade are innumerable. Higher quality foods, including home made dog food recipes which are abundant and easy to find online if you search for “home made dog food”, provide your animal with a shinier coat, clear eyes, normal bowel movements and a generally happier disposition.

Many dogs are allergic to the lower quality ingredients found in cheap dog food. You might find that with a better dog food your pet will have less “itchies” and shed far less as well. Better health decreases the amount of yeast in the ears which some breeds are prone to.

Also once they have the nutrients they need their bodies will be capable of healing faster after a surgery, accident or procedure. Animals learn best when their needs are met. So if you’ve been relying on low quality food and haven’t had much luck with training, changing to a higher quality might be part of the answer. No one feels like producing good work when they’re hungry or living on a diet of garbage. Same holds true with our furry friends.

Own a big and beautiful Saint Bernard. Adopted him after he was hit by a semi truck, no kidding, and walked away with just a scratch. After the stitches were in place his owner decided that he wasn’t what they considered to be “show quality” and dumped him at a shelter. We brought him home and kept him on the generic brand food the shelter had been feeding him.

He had a few raw spots on his legs and back that we attributed to a rash he’d acquired in the kennel. I took him back to the shelter to see what they recommended. A simple ointment was the suggestion I left with and after 2 weeks it had done no good. He had been steadily having loose bowel movements and I worried, took him to my vet and after a few minutes she came out with a diagnosis. He wasn’t getting enough protein from the food in his diet.

Upgraded to the next most expensive brand, thinking that a 180 pound dog would eat me out of house and home. His rashes got a bit better and a couple of them went away. It wasn’t until I bit the bullet and went in for the higher quality food that saw the best results. After 3 weeks his raw and tender spots were completely healed, his itchy ears were under control and his demeanor had calmed immensely.

Now he has a full, gorgeous coat and has gained almost 50 pounds. I am a firm believer that your results are determined by what you put into it. Animals need to have a good diet as much or more than humans do. It’s essential in every aspect of their being and to cheap out on the care you provide them is not only unnecessary and detrimental, but uncaring and neglectful.
